1. Install the app
- Open the app on the Shopify App Store and click Install.
- Approve the permissions. The app needs them to read and write metafields on your products, collections, customers, orders and content.
- Choose a plan. Pro starts with a 14-day free trial; you can switch at any time.
You land on the app's Home page with a setup checklist that follows the same steps as this guide.
2. Create your fields
- Go to Fields and pick where the fields live — for example Products.
- Click Add field. Give it a label (what your team sees), a key (used in your theme) and a type.
- Optional: open Help text and rules to add help text, mark the field required or set a minimum and maximum length.
- To keep related fields together, add a group — for example "Specifications" — and add fields inside it. Groups can repeat, so one product can have several entries.
- Click Save.
3. Fill in values
Open a product from Home → Products (or any other resource) to see the editor. Fill in the fields and click Save.
- Use J and K to move to the next and previous product, and / to search.
- On products with variants, use the Variants card to switch to a variant's own fields.
- Image fields have Crop / focus: crop into a new file (the original stays) or click the important part of the image to set its focal point.
- Copy to… copies the values to other products; Templates saves them for reuse.
4. Show fields on your store
Option A — theme block (no code)
- In Shopify, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize.
- Open a product page template, click Add block, and choose Metafield under Apps.
- Pick the field to show, adjust the heading and style, and save the theme.
Option B — Liquid code
In the app, go to Fields → Liquid code to get copy-ready code for every field and group, plus a product JSON-LD snippet for search engines. A simple text field looks like this:
{% if product.metafields.custom.material %}
<p>{{ product.metafields.custom.material.value }}</p>
{% endif %}
Option C — Shopify dynamic sources
Fields with a matching metafield definition can also be connected to any theme setting through Shopify's "Connect dynamic source" button.
Bulk editor
- Open Bulk editor and choose the resource type and the fields you want as columns.
- Filter by status, product type, vendor, tag or field set.
- Click a cell to edit it, then Save. Use a column's menu to set, append, prepend, find & replace or clear values — on this page or on every matching resource.
- Save the setup as a view to come back to it later.
Column actions on all matching resources run in the background and can be undone from Import & export → Activity.
CSV import & export
- Go to Import & export and export the resource type you want. You get a CSV with one row per resource and one column per field.
- Edit it in Excel or Google Sheets. Leave a cell empty to keep the current value.
- Import the file and click Check file first to see what will change.
- Run the import. If anything looks wrong, open Activity and click Undo.
Global values
Use Global values to set one value on many resources at once — every product, the products in a collection, or all resources of a type. The job runs in the background and shows its progress.
Automatic rules Pro
- Go to Automation → Rules and click Add rule.
- Choose when it runs (resource created, updated, or both) and the conditions — for example "tag contains
vegan". - Choose the fields to set and their values, then turn the rule on.
Click Apply to existing to run a rule once on the resources that already match.
Scheduled changes Pro
Go to Automation → Schedules, choose the resources and the new values, and pick when to apply them. Add an optional end time to put the previous values back automatically — ideal for sale badges and launch copy.
History & restore Pro
Every change is kept for 90 days. Open History from Home, or the history icon next to a field in the editor, and click Restore on any earlier value.
Field sets Pro
In Fields → Help text and rules, use Show this field only for some products and choose conditions such as product type, vendor, tags or status. The field is hidden for everything else in the editor, bulk editor and admin blocks — and it's only required where it applies.
Shopify Flow Pro
In the Shopify Flow app, start a new workflow and search for Fieldwise triggers such as Product metafield changed, Customer metafield changed, Order metafield changed and Product required fields missing. Combine them with Flow's actions — send a Slack message, add a tag, or hide a product until it's complete.
Admin blocks
- Open a product, collection, customer or order in your Shopify admin.
- Scroll to the blocks area, click the apps menu and add the Metafields block from Fieldwise. Pin it to keep it on every page.
- Edit the fields right there and click Save, or open the full editor.
Health check
From Home, run the Health check. It lists resources missing required values, JSON values close to Shopify's 128 KB limit, and leftover metafields from deleted fields or old apps. On Pro you can remove leftovers in one go — removed values stay in history.
