Questions merchants ask
Short answers about metafields, the bulk editor, CSV import, automation, billing and your data. Can't find yours? Ask us.
Metafields and fields
What is a metafield?
A metafield is an extra piece of information Shopify stores with a product, variant, collection, customer, order, page, blog or the shop itself — for example a material, a size chart or a care guide. Fieldwise gives each one a label, help text and the right input, so your team can fill them in without touching code.
Which resources can have fields?
Products, variants, smart and custom collections, customers, orders, pages, blogs, blog posts and the shop itself.
Which field types are supported?
Single and multi-line text, rich text, numbers, dates, colors, URLs, email, phone, images, files and JSON. Existing metafields of other Shopify types keep their type when you edit them.
Will my theme be able to read the fields?
Yes. Every value is saved as a standard Shopify metafield, so your theme, Shopify Flow, email templates and other apps can use it. Use the Metafield theme block, the generated Liquid, or Shopify's own dynamic sources.
I already have metafields from another app. Can I use them?
Yes. Add a field with the same namespace and key and Fieldwise shows the existing values. The health check lists metafields that no field covers yet, so you can find them.
Can a field be required?
Yes. Mark a field required and set a minimum or maximum length. The editor, the bulk editor and the import all check it, and the health check lists products where it's missing.
Bulk editing and CSV
How do I edit many products at once?
Open the bulk editor: products are rows and fields are columns, like a spreadsheet. Filter by status, type, vendor or tag, then edit cells or change a whole column with set, add text, find and replace or clear.
Can I undo a bulk change?
Yes. Column changes on all matching products run in the background and can be undone from the activity log. Pro also keeps a version history of every value for 90 days.
Which CSV format does the import use?
Columns namespace, key, type, value and label, plus owner_id to find each item — or the handle for products, collections, pages and blogs, the email for customers and the order name for orders. Shopify's own type names such as single_line_text_field work too. Download a sample file from the import window.
Will an import overwrite my data by mistake?
Click "Check file" first: it lists every new and changed value before anything is saved. Empty cells are skipped, existing values are only replaced when you tick the option, and the whole import can be undone.
Automation (Pro)
What do automatic rules do?
A rule sets a field when a product (or other resource) is created or updated and matches your conditions, such as a tag, type, vendor or status. Values typed by hand are kept unless you choose to overwrite them.
What are scheduled changes?
Set a new value at a date and time — for example a sale badge on Friday — and optionally an end time when the previous values are put back automatically.
Does it work with Shopify Flow?
Yes. Fieldwise adds Flow triggers when a metafield changes and when required fields are missing, so you can send alerts or start other workflows.
Billing and data
How much does it cost?
Basic is $18/month and Pro is $29/month, both with a 14-day free trial and no limits on fields, products or values. See pricing for what each plan includes.
How am I billed?
Through Shopify, on your regular Shopify invoice in USD every 30 days. We never see your card details.
What happens to my data if I uninstall?
Your metafield values stay in Shopify — they belong to your store, not to us. The app's own settings (field layouts, rules, history) are deleted when you uninstall.
Does Fieldwise store customer data?
Values are kept in Shopify. Customer names and emails are read live from Shopify to show in the app and are not stored by us. Details are in the privacy policy.
Do I need a developer?
No. The theme block shows fields without code, and setup help is free on every plan. If you do work with a developer, they'll appreciate the Liquid and JSON-LD generator.
